SAISA Mallory Qualifier

Summary

Saturday, May 3:

Sixteen teams arrived in St. Petersburg for the SAISA Conference fleet racing championships, qualifier for the Mallory national championship. Host University of South Florida provided a fleet of new FJ's and racing began promptly at 10:00am in Bayboro Harbor.

Winds began from the SE at 8 knots and slowly shifted to the S and ultimately SW throughout the day, mostly in the 7 to 12 knot range. Courses were W4's, W5's and W6's, with races averaging 14-15 minutes in length. Sixteen races were completed, 8 in each division. Successful teams were able to consistently stay in the pressure and "connect the dots".

One request for redress was filed and granted. Four protests were filed resulting in two disqualifications. Special thanks to the protest committee chaired by Ian Lineberger for their thorough, two hour-long marathon of hearing protests.

Sunday, May 4:

After a brief early morning line of showers, the skies cleared with a steady SW wind at 9 to 16 knots. Six additional races in both divisions were run for a total of 14 races in both divisions. Courses were W4's, W5's and W6's and averaged 12 to 15 minutes in length.

Two downwind capsizes occurred between races due to unfamiliarity with FJ's. Five protests were reported, but only two were filed, both disallowed.

The Antilles Hurricanes dominated the field with clean, smart sailing and were the only team under 100 points for the win. Second place Ransom Everglades Raiders were second and also advance to the Mallory national championships. The final team to qualify was a nail-biter, with 3rd through 7th place separated by only 4 points at the end of thirteen races. Lucy Beckham Bengals prevailed and are the 3rd SAISA team to qualify for nationals.

Thanks to Regatta Chair and ISSA rep Todd Fedyszyn, Chief Judge Ian Lineberger, and the USF team members who assisted in keeping the regatta running smoothly.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
