Rhode Island State Championships

Summary

Saturday, May 17:

Sailors were greeted at the Dr Wallace Sailing Center to thick Newport fog. Boats were readied, we held a competitors meeting, and then postponed ashore for a half-hour. Luckily the fog lifted quickly. It threatened to come back for a brief period, but stayed away for us to safely race at the mouth of Newport Harbor.

In the morning we sailed in moderate southerly winds at around 6-8 knots. We completed 4 races, sailing in combined divisions, without rotating boats. W4's with offsets and gates were sailed for odd numbered races, while W3's were sailing for even races.

We took a 40 minute lunch break ashore before heading out for the afternoon. The breeze shifted to South East and became more unstable, but an additional 6 races were completed. Again W4's with offsets and gates were sailed for odd numbered races, while W3's were sailing for even races. The last race was sailed in 4-5 knots and the race committee stayed active in moving marks at the bottom of the course to try and keep things square.

4 protests were lodged at the committee boat, but only one was filed at the end of the day. The protest was heard by Sail Newport's Nick Ewenson and Diarmaid Desmond, Race Programs Director and Regatta Manager respectfully. We invited crews into the room to observe. The protest was disallowed.

Thank you to all who competed and big congrats to Portsmouth High School who sailed consistently in tricky conditions, coming away as Rhody State Champs with about half the points at their next competitors.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
