2025 Phebe Corckran King Memorial Trophy

Summary

Saturday, May 31:

Eighteen sailing teams representing the MASSA, MISSA, NESSA, NWISA and PCISA Districts from 12 different states (CA, CT, IL, MA, MD MI, MN, NJ, NY, OH, RI and WA) arrived at Toms River Yacht Club for the Phoebe King Memorial Trophy regatta.

After the pre-dawn rain stopped, the wind continued to build to a blustery westerly breeze as A Division headed out to start racing for the day. Although the first race was completed, there were several capsizes and the Race Committee sent everybody in for a postponement to wait for the wind to settle down. Although still windy, the breeze decreased enough to allow teams to get back out around 11 AM and racing continued with both Divisions completing their first four races in very challenging conditions consisting of oscillating wind directions, gusts in the mid-20s along with a combination of rain, sun and cloudy skies. During race 5A, another storm cell rolled down the river with big breeze that was immediately followed by the wind dying off for the last race of the day to be sailed in light wind conditions. With another ominous storm cell on the horizon, racing was ended for the day at 6A.

There was one DNS, one breakdown and one protest is pending.

Through races 6A and 4B, Severna Park is in the lead with 58 points, followed by Greenwich in 2nd with 63 points and Barrington right behind them in 3rd with 64 points.

Thank you to PRO Dave Magno and John Paggi on the RC Boat, US Sailing judges, Harry Foote and Vince Harris. Mark/patrol boats volunteers James Byrne, Tracy Van Dorpe , Paul Magno and Rich McGowan. Brian Hull assisted dockside. As always, thank you to TRYC and BBYRA for their ongoing support of high school Sailing.

Racing will resume tomorrow morning with race B5 in conditions forecast for sunny skies and less breeze than today’s crazy weather provided.

Sunday, June 1:

The RC set the W4 course and sailing began today under bright sunny skies with a 15+ knot westerly breeze to continue with yesterday’s sporty conditions.

The day began with race 5B and continued through races A10 and B10 being completed to wrap up sailing by the 1400 hrs deadline.

After a total of 20 races over the weekend, competition was so tight it resulted in a point tie for first place. The Barrington Eagles won the tie breaker to claim first place and a coveted BBYRA Rooster flag. Severna Park Falcons in ended in 2nd Place, with the Greenwich Cardinals nine points behind in 3rd place.

Congratulations and thanks to all the teams that came to Toms River to sail!

Again, thank you to PRO Dave Magno and John Paggi on the RC Boat, US Sailing judges, Harry Foote and Vince Harris and Jan O’Malley. Mark/patrol boats volunteers today were Tracy Van Dorpe , Paul Magno, Dave Applegate and Sean Crabb. Brian Hull assisted again today with the boats dockside. Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
