MASSA Fall Girls Invitational Champs Green Div

Summary

Saturday, November 15:

The weather turned out to be just beautiful with temps in the mid-60's and winds initially out of the SW at 6-7mph. The wind got squirrely around 11 with less than ideal conditions, clocked 180 degrees, and then dropped forcing a number of course changes and a delay on the water until the wind filled in just after noon. Initially light around 5mph westerly, the wind clocked to SW again, settling for a bit at WSW, and back to SW while building throughout the afternoon to 15mph. Gusts were slightly higher.

For this invitational event, 36 teams were seeded using RP data from previous season regattas into 2 approximately evenly weighted divisions for the qualifying races. The divisions were scored as separate events. They rotated through 18 boats with the green div. completing a set of 2 races followed by the red division completing a set, then green again, etc. Four races were completed in each division and the teams were then ranked and seeded in silver and gold divisions for the final championship races with the top 9 teams in each of green and red seeded into gold division and the bottom 9 teams in each of green and red seeded into silver division. The teams completed 2 races in each of the silver and gold divisions before racing was concluded as the sun was setting. The top 3 teams in gold division will place in first through third place for the entire event.

At the end of the Saturday, Severn Team 2 was in first place in gold with 3 points. Antilles Team 2 sat in second with 5 points, and Rye Team 1 was in third with 8 points. In the silver competition, Falmouth Maine Yachtsman ended the day breaking the tie for first with 5 points, followed by Tabor White in second, also with 5 points. Summit took third with 6 points.

We look forward to more racing tomorrow in silver and gold divisions with possibly sporty conditions.

Sunday, November 16:

The forecast delivered with winds in the mid to high teens initially out of the west, clocking to northerly mid day. Gusts were a bit higher, at times reaching the mid 20's. Seas had a slight chop in the protected waters of Fort Monroe. The girls were tough and proved that they could hang in the stiff breeze with tight competition in the fleet.

We started the day with three gold races on the same course as yesterday, a W-4 with a reach finish across the bow of the committee boat. Three silver races followed, then another three gold, and a final 3 silver for a regatta total of 4 races in each of reg and green divisions and 8 races total in each of the silver and gold divisions.

A couple of breakdown hearings in the gold division resulted in two teams being awarded byes for equipment failures.

The first three boats in Gold division take the top three places for the event. First place for the regatta goes to MAST Academy with 39 points. They were followed closely by Severn Team 1 in second with 40 points. Rye Team one took third place with 49 points. In addition to trophies, girls in the top three teams were awarded rigging knives with lanyards.

Much thanks goes to YSV and all of the individuals who made the event possible. Tyler Moore did a great job as PRO along with Kerry Ambrosino who scored from the committee boat. Gary Bodie served as regatta chair and created the format. Melissa Green is the unsung hero who continues to pick up loose pieces to make the YSV regattas possible. Mitch Brindley, AJ Picillo, Tyler Brown, all of the ODU sailors who helped with judging and scoring. Leigh Chapman who tirelessly moved marks. Special thanks to Ric Handly who showed up with Sunday's breeze to serve as a much needed safety boat. And of course to all others who helped with the equipment, breakdowns, first aid, etc. Without the volunteer efforts of all of this group, we would not be able to conduct these regattas.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
