A peaceful fall morning greeted the 28 sailors as they arrived in Castine for the Girls State double-handed Championship. All forecasts predicted a strong and gusty Northwesterly would materialize in the afternoon, and the fleet had a nervous energy as they rigged and then quietly glided to the course in Smith Cove. The first two races were sailed in around 5 knots of wind as the weak frontal boundary cleared the area, and Falmouth HS took the lead with 1st and a 2nd in the set. Before race 3, the new breeze came pouring into the cove from the Northwest, and MMA's fleet of 420's jumped to life. The big breeze was to Islesboro's liking, and they climbed the standings swiftly after a solid win in race 3. Race 4 had the strongest wind of the day and was sailed on an Olympic course. Islesboro and Pen Bay 2 were well in front of the fleet as they approached the leeward mark, when they both ended up capsized. A lengthy redress hearing regarding this unfortunate turn of events weighed on the outcome of the regatta. After a lunch break, the wind settled back down a bit, and races 5 and 6 were sailed in exceptionally good conditions. PRO Peter Clapp ran races that averaged a little over 20 minutes, and allowed for the fastest boats to rise to the top of the leaderboard. The front of the fleet proved to be evenly matched with 5 different teams winning individual races. In the end, Falmouth's consistent presence in the top three won the day. Islesboro was left with a bitter taste when they were denied redress on the capsize incident, and a championship that was within their grasp slipped away. Both MMA launches were full with spectators, and around 50 parents got to witness the drama first hand; many for the first time. The close up viewing gave a new understanding of the sport, especially for the numerous parents that are not sailors themselves. Thank you to Maine Maritime Varsity Sailors Nicho Paulu, Aims Smit, Ryan Becker, and Drake Reid for assisting with regatta management. Also, thank you to our local HS Parents Lisa Arhontes-Marshall and Amy Baker for providing such warm hospitality for the visiting teams. All in all it was an epic day for HS Sailing in Maine. The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
